Course Rationale and Outline
In developing an effective ESL curriculum, it is important to understand and take into account the goals of the students,the families and the school authority. These are not necessarily all the same and must be addressed.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, the student will understand how and when to incorporate lessons on the essentials of language learning: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking and Vocabulary-Building.
The student will have have learned various methods for measuring student progress.
The student will be able to provide regular information on student learning to school authorities and parents.

Assignments:
This course has two assignments:
1. Review of Available Materials
The student will develop a list of 10 textbooks and/or other teaching resources that are currently available such as workbooks, handbooks, websites, resource books for teachers, magazines and periodicals, audio and visual materials that can be adopted/adapted for an ESL curriculum. A trip to a bookstore with an ESL section will be a great help.
For each one, the student will write a 150- to 250-word review including the description of the resource such as: content, organization, level of comprehension and age of intended audience. The student will also eveluate the resource in terms of its strengths, weaknesses and appropriateness for an ESL curriculum.
2. Curriculum Development Project
In this project, the student will gain experience in designing and reviewing a curriculum, course syllabus, teaching and assessment materials as well as structure of the intended lessons for the course.
The proposal should have the following five sections:
a. Curriculum Statement
b. A course syllabus
c. Sample lesson plans
d. List of possible teaching materials with annotations
e. Assessment Plan: initial, interim and final
Through this project, the student will demonstrate his or her knowledge of good principles of curriculum design, teaching and assessment material evaluation, for the ESL field. We are looking for a complete and cohesive plan that addresses the essentials and the goals of language learning.
