Course Rationale and Outline

There is a vast difference between English as a spoken language and as a written one. Teaching students to write effectively for the purpose of learning is critical to their eventual success with the language and progress to higher learning.

There is nothing like practical training and so we have chosen to have students take this course as though they were writing students. It will hone their personal writing skills and make them better teachers of English writing.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will learn about the basic pre-writing and writing skills, structure of English essay writing, the writing process, revising essays including unity, support, coherence and sentence skills. They will learn various forms of essays including: Descriptive, Narrative, Process, Cause and Effect, Comparison and Contrast, and Persuasive and Argumentative.

Students will learn how to take essay exams, write a summary, write a report, write their resume (CV), write a job application letter, use the library and Internet for research, and how to write a research report.

The course includes many exercises in grammar, mechanics, spelling, punctuation and word use designed to improve the students' writing skills.

Assignments:

This is a writing course. Students will be required to write a number of essays in varying lengths, possibly a research paper, a resume and other forms of written communication. The essays will generally require three drafts: first, second and final. Writing and revising is how students learn to understand the writing process and improve their writing skills. Through doing this, the student will learn the entire process and be able to take that knowledge and teach similar academic writing courses.

At the end of the course, the student will complilel his or her writings into a single document including a title page, table of contents and bibliography.

Before completing this assignment, please read our assignment guidelines.
