Dip 102 - ESL Methods and Strategies (3 credits)

Course Rationale and Outline

It is critical that anyone studying language teaching has a full understanding of why different methodologies develop and evolve. The computer age, followed by the Internet have casued many contemporary methodologies and interactive techniques to become part of effective ESL teaching.

 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the student will have gained a broad understanding of the many methodologies, both traditional and contemporary, that have been developed in the field of ESL teaching. Each methodology has its own merits and limitations.

The student will have learned how to apply certain methodologies and teaching techniques to various to different age and comprehension levels.

The student will have developed an understanding of how to develop or where to find supporting activities and material for each methodology.

The student will be able to write convincingly about the methodologies s/he has researched.

Assignment:

The student will research 25 methodologies or second language teaching techniques and will write a paper that summarizes eash methodology, discusses its advantages and limitations, suggest levels and ages at which it could be used, and whether it could be combined with other methodologies or techniques. The student will outline and any experience s/he has had applying the methodology and with what results.
