College Writing Skills

This is an e-learning course for students whose first language is not English but who plan to study in college or university in English.  Students need to enhance their English writing skills in order to do well with their writing assignments, research reports and theses.

The course may also be of interest to business people who want to improve their ability to understand English writings and to write better business letters and reports.

Prerequisites:

It is open to anyone with a good command of English who wants to improve their writing skills.  It is not intended as a course in creative writing however the skills learned in this course would definitely benefit anyone planning to go on to take such a course.

This course may be taken as an independent non-credit course, though some colleges and universities may allow credit towards one of their degree programs. As each institution sets their own criteria, you would have to check with the college or university of your choice. It may definitely be applied to any degree program taken with Glengarry University:

Course Length: We do not set a definite course length but students should set goals for themselves and should be able to complete the course in three to six months depending on the time they have to devote to the course.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will learn about the basic pre-writing and writing skills, structure of English essay writing, the writing process, revising essays including unity, support, coherence and sentence skills. They will learn various forms of essays including: Descriptive, Narrative, Process, Cause and Effect, Comparison and Contrast, and Persuasive and Argumentative.

Students will learn how to take essay exams, write a summary, write a report, write their resume (CV), write a job application letter, use the library and Internet for research, and how to write a research report.

The course includes many exercises in grammar, mechanics, spelling, punctuation and word use designed to improve the students' writing skills.

Assignments:

This is a writing course. Students will be required to write a number of essays in varying lengths, a major research paper, a resume and other forms of written communication. The essays will generally require three drafts: first, second and final. Writing and revising is how students learn to understand the writing process and improve their writing skills.
